Farewell to Summer and An Enquiry from Argentina

My Garden in the Wicklow Mountains

Although it has been a wonderfully sunny day today, Summer is most definitely over.  The garden has turned to gold and the days are becoming markedly shorter.

We moved to Wicklow in March so during the course of the last few months I have been able to watch the garden come to life for the first time in all its glory.  Even now the wonderful display is not completely over - but the garden is visibly starting to prepare for the long cold months of winter.

There have been surprises aplenty as flowers I was not expecting appeared in a profusion of colour. These photographs were taken between May and September so everything you see here did not bloom at once or at the same time - but taken together it is a glorious testament to the beauty of nature.

An Enquiry from Argentina

Earlier this week I received an email from Silvina who lives in Argentina.  She collects vintage children's crockery and china. Her blog Tazas & Cuentos is absolutely delightful.  Besides showing us her collection there are tantalising glimpses of Silvina's beautiful home which gives a wonderful impression of space and light.

Silvina contacted me because she is trying to identify these illustrations from a set of dishes she owns:

They were made in Argentina and many have "Hartford" printed on them.  Silvina was hoping that I might know the story these pictures are from or the artist who illustrated them.  They do look very familiar and I keep thinking I should recognise them, but I just can't place the artist or the story.  I asked Barbara at March House Books if she had seen them before and like me Barbara also finds the illustrations familiar but can't place them.

Once before I was able to identify an artist by putting their work on my blog (Can You Help Me Identify This Artist / Success - An Answer to My Inquiry).  I'm hoping someone will be able to provide the answer to these tantalising images as well.  If you can please leave me or Silvina a comment (or you can email me - tab on my sidebar).

  1. How absolutely charming ... what a beautiful country you live in. I heard on the tv lately that the biggest minority in Ireland are Polish folk. I'm a New York
American but my heritage is Polish. Also, I have a big interest in and attraction to all things Celtic. I've heard that the folks in southern Poland were Celts and as I'm sure you know the Celts made their way west toward your lands. Anyway, like I always say, we are all from the same family.

    Love and Light,

  2. Hello Sharon!
Wonderful flowers and photos! Here Spring is coming but it's a bit cold yet.
It was so kind of you to post my enquiry in your blog! I hope we can get some information, I'm so curious about these images.
What a coincidence! I have found Barbara's blog some days ago. I'm sure I'll learn a lot about children's illustrations and enjoying a lot reading your fantastic blogs.
A big hug from Argentina and thank you very much again!

  3. Hi Sharon, those illustrations are familiar to me too - could they be by Willy Schermele? I have a vintage copy of Fairy Tale Secrets and the style is very similar...
Your garden is beautiful, perfect for alover of fairy tales like you x

  6. What a wonderful and magical garden. I loved seeing it in all its glory throughout the different months. Beautiful! The illustrations look familiar to me, too- but I cannot place them. They do keep reminding me of something and if it comes to me I will let you know.

  7. It must be so exciting waiting to see what will flower next, I wonder if you will have snowdrops in February? The rhododendrons and honeysuckle are wonderful. I’ve never been able to grow rhododendrons (is that how you spell it?) because we have the wrong type of soil. They do OK in pots but always end up getting too big.
I love the magic wand/rose and stars on your blog – so pretty!
I also love Silvina’s blog I could (and probably will) spend many a happy hour there. I hope someone recognises the pictures – it’s driving me mad as I’m sure I’ve seen them or something very like them before. I sat down with all my reference books the other evening but no luck. Did you think about asking at Bear Alley? It may not be Steve’s kind of thing, but he might be able to help.

  11. Hi Sharon, I woke up with a name in my head this morning and wonder if these could be by Fritz Baumgarten? He was born in 1883 so it could fit in with the date. He illustrated lots of children’s books, and I have a vague recollection of a series of postcard featuring gnomes and crickets/bugs of some kind. It might be worth a little investigation.
