Sunday Story - The Fairy Child

The Fairy Child - Jose Ortiz

For September's Sunday Story I've chosen 'The Fairy Child', beautifully illustrated by the wonderfully talented artist Jose Ortiz.

Two of the illustrations contained in the story were included in one of my earlier posts called Fabulous Fairies.

This story appeared in 'Once Upon a Time' children's magazine.
Issue #55 published 28 February 1970.

A card I bought this week to send to a friend.  I love the poem (Yeats was born in Dublin):

The Stolen Child by William Butler Yeats

At the beginning of last week I was ill in bed for a couple of days.  The first day it rained from morning to night - which was good as I slept the whole time!  The second morning was glorious with wonderful sunshine.  I lay in bed and looked at the garden through the window - this is what I saw.  It was lovely and I could lie and watch all the little birds darting about!   (I'm quite fine now.)

Even when I was very small I liked to stop and smell the roses. . .

I'm glad you're feeling better Sharon. A window view like that would cheer anyone up I reckon. Another gorgeous photo of little you. So sweet, and a reminder that sometimes we all need to (you know I'm going to say it! Ha-ha!) stop and smell the roses.

What a nice post, Sharon. You have such a lovely combination of personal history, art and poetry. I always feel like we had a great visit looking at your books and having a cup of tea together when I read your blog!

So happy to hear that you are feeling better and that you had such a nice view while you were ill. I love that you have always stopped to smell the roses! So important to find something beautiful each day.

Thanks for including the fairy story. I love fairies and was relieved to see on the last page that she went back to visit the washerwoman after she got her wings! :)

Hi Sharon,

So glad to hear you are feeling better. You have a wonderful view of the garden and that picture of you as a child is so precious. Lovely fairy poem by Yeats.

Such a beautiful photo Sharon that must be one of your favourites! I’m sure gazing at your lovely garden is just what the doctor ordered, glad you are feeling better. I love all the pictures from the fairy child and the poem, thank you for sharing them.
I wonder if you found my reply to your query about the book you are trying to find?
If not this is it - it certainly sounds as though it could be an Enid Blyton. The problem is so many of her stories revolve around children, woods and follies. One that springs to mind is the mystery of the hidden house. The story is about Mr. Goon's nephew, Ern, who disappears on the road to "Harry's Folly." I think Harry’s folly is located in Bourne Woods. Does any of that ring any bells?
